Neutral Schemes

Neutral tones are going to be a key trend this autumn but do not think this needs to be dull and boring. By layering different shades and using texture, this scheme will be interesting and relaxing.

Getting started

Neutral tones can range from muted taupes, to bright creams and sophisticated shades of grey.  You need to choose the best shade for your room by considering the way the room faces and the amount of light you get and also the atmosphere you want to create.  Do you want a light and airy room or are you trying to create a warm and cosy scheme?

I always advise to starting any scheme by selecting your fabrics first. Many companies will mix a bespoke paint colour for you so it is easier to match a paint colour to a fabric rather than a fabric to a paint colour.

Make a moodboard

Make a moodboard

I would also recommend creating a mood board so that you can see how the different shades and textures you have chosen work together.  To do this you need to collect samples of the items you are using.  You can also include images of things you have used for your inspiration for example photographs or cut outs from magazines.

Mixing designs and textures

To make the scheme interesting try mixing stripes, checks and florals in neutral tones.  For example you could choose a floral as a curtain material and then have a selection of cushions in checks and stripes. Another option would be to use velvet as a curtain fabric, this would create a luxurious feel and add another texture. Woollen throws are a great way of adding more texture to a living room or bedroom. Upholstered furniture could be plain or why not introduce a tartan chair to introduce a statement piece into your room.

Flooring is best kept plain but could be carpet or wood with a rug added for warmth and texture.

If you want to add just a splash of colour, you could introduce this as a bold piece of artwork.  You could also add a bit of sparkle by having a gilt mirror or embellished throw.

Kitchens

Kitchens

Neutral tones are great for use in a kitchen. Painted cream units look stylish and are often used to create a country style kitchen, use with wooden worktops and cream floor tiles (limestone is ideal) and add plain accessories.  Blinds are ideal in a kitchen and a neutral stripe fabric would look very smart.

Using these neutrals in living rooms and bedrooms create a relaxing feel and are suitable for all types of homes – from city apartments to country houses.
