Top 5 Reasons For Using Wool Fabric

We often think of wool fabric for our clothing, but it can also be a great choice for interiors. Here are our top five reasons for choosing wool fabric for your home.

1. Wool Fabric is Versatile

The selection of wool fabric available in the interiors sector has grown hugely over the years. Whichever colour scheme you’re planning, you’re guaranteed to find a wool or boiled wool fabric that suits. A great way to start a project is to choose a wool fabric for either upholstery or curtains and then pick out the colours within it for the walls and accessories.

At Just Fabrics, we have a large range of 100% wool fabrics in different patterns and hues, making them an excellent choice for any room. Shown here on an occasional chair is the Lewis fabric in fireside from Abraham Moon on both the chair and as curtains. It has just enough colour to lift it, making it a soft, subtle wool that co-ordinates with purples, blues, greys and neutrals.

2. It's Durable

2. It's Durable

Wool fabric is inherently fire-retardant and doesn’t need to be treated, making it perfect for upholstery. It also has excellent flexibility and will return to its natural shape, even if it’s been stretched up to 30%. So, whether you choose a wool fabric for your upholstery or curtains, you can rest assured they’ll stand the test of time.

3. Wool is Low Maintenance

The structure of the wool fibres mean that dirt doesn’t penetrate the fabric, but sits on top, making it extremely easy to clean with a vacuum and very low-maintenance. The fibres also adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room, which deters dust mites from nesting in the fabric.

4. Wool Will Keep You Warm or Cool

Wool fabric is well-known for its insulating properties. With low thermal conductivity, it’s great for both hot and cold weather. In the UK, it’s especially popular for curtains and blinds as it dramatically reduces the draught felt from single-glazed traditional windows, especially when combined with an interlining or thermal lining.

5. Wool Fabric is Eco-Friendly

5. Wool Fabric is Eco-Friendly

Wool fabric has great eco-credentials – every year sheep produce a new fleece, making wool the ideal renewable fibre source for your interiors.

The Campaign For Wool was launched by Prince Charles in 2010 to promote the environmental benefits of this natural, renewable and biodegradable fabric and since its launch there’s been a large increase in the price farmers receive for their wool. As the need for eco-friendly products grows, we’re likely to see wool fabrics increasing in popularity across the interiors sector.
