Creating a Timeless Scheme with Country Fabrics

When I think of a country home, I picture wooden floors, Belfast sinks, wood burners and the whole family chatting around a rustic kitchen table. But what really brings a country scheme together are the fabrics.

Whether your style calls for a simple linen, pretty floral or classic gingham, our Cotswold-based team have some top tips for using country fabrics to create the perfect interior for your rural home.

Use Country Fabrics to Soften your Kitchen Scheme

Use Country Fabrics to Soften your Kitchen Scheme

Soft furnishings don’t tend to be the priority when designing a kitchen, but if you choose wisely, they can lift a scheme and add real character. If the hub of your country home is the kitchen, think about how you can use country fabrics to accessorise your room.

For a simple, budget-friendly update, add gingham seat pads to the chairs around your kitchen table, creating a welcoming space for family and friends to congregate.

Dressing your windows in a fun printed fabric will add colour to your scheme and help you regulate the room temperature too. Try a bespoke roman blind in a contemporary country fabric or for a feminine, relaxed feel hang a short curtain in a floral print, such as Clarisse.

If you’re lucky enough to have French doors leading out onto a garden or patio, floor-length curtains in a country check hung on a wooden pole would make a wonderful feature. And pick out accent colours from your fabric for mugs, vintage-style vases and tea towels too.

Create a Cosy Country Living Room

When you’re planning a country living room, soft furnishings are key. From sofas to rugs and curtains to blinds, there are plenty of opportunities to add interest to your scheme.

Our popular plaid fabrics are perfect for a creating a cosy living room. Use as an upholstery fabric on a statement chair or sofa and complement with cushions such as Angus, a fun country cushion with a highland cow design.

For window treatments, a linen striped curtain fabric looks fantastic hung on a chunky pole. If stripes aren’t your thing, stick with the linen look but keep it plain. Country florals and animal prints also look beautiful as a living room curtain fabric. Or for a timeless look, choose one of our stunning Voyage country fabrics.

Whether you have an open fire or a wood burner, accessorise with a natural wooden coffee table and a pile of woollen throws – a must for getting that authentic country feel.

Go Rustic in your Bathroom

Go Rustic in your Bathroom

Country bathrooms are traditionally feminine and floral, with roman blinds in floral printed fabric and sometimes even matching floral wallpaper. But if this style isn’t for you, then simplify the scheme.

Create a rustic feel with wooden floorboards and a roll-top bath, and accessorise with wicker baskets and an old painted ladder as a towel rack. Complement your scheme with roman blinds in a plain fabric, such as Arielli, or a check.

Keep your Country Bedroom up to Date

Bedrooms in country homes can become dated fairly quickly, with frilly floral valances and extravagant window treatments. But by picking the right country fabrics, you’ll find it easy to create a look that’s fitting but contemporary.

Keep bed linen plain and simple, and bring in colour and interest by using the windows as a focal point. A light floral curtain fabric is perfect for a feminine feel, while a relaxing stripe can really show off the master bedroom. For a child’s room, try a simple roman blind in a pastel spotted fabric or animal print.

If you have an en-suite, carry the colours through from the bedroom with accessories, a painted feature wall, or even a bath in a complementary eggshell paint.

Layering works well in bedrooms, so pile floral throws and cushions on the bed, and soften wooden flooring with a neutral woollen rug.
