Guest Bedrooms

Are you having guests to stay for Christmas? Here are a few tips for turning a cold, unloved spare bedroom into a cosy and welcoming retreat for your guests.

Boutique Hotel Style

This contemporary look is stylish and chic.  Textures are very important so use woollen throws in muted hues, linen style plain curtains hung from a curtain pole and a headboard covered in upholstery fabric.  Neutral colours such as greys and taupes work best in this type of scheme. These colours will bring a feeling of relaxation and calm to your guests.

Scottish hunting lodge

A key trend this winter is to bring the feel of a Scottish hunting lodge into your home.  The ideal choice for this scheme is to use tartans - this could be as a curtain fabric, upholstery fabric or for cushions.  Coordinate this with a highland inspired fabric such as thistles or highland themes.  A statement chair upholstered in tartan fabric is great in a bedroom - somewhere to curl up and read.  You could also introduce cushions or stools depicting highland images such as highland cows or stags. This is a very cosy scheme - sure to make your guests feel warm and welcome.

Cosy country inn - vintage style

Cosy country inn - vintage style

For a more traditional look think of a room in a country style inn.   Use a faded linen floral curtain fabric, pick out a couple of these colours for cushions to pile on the bed and use some antique style bedlinen or floral bedcover to complete the look.  This relaxing look will work well in any style of house from country cottage to a more contemporary interior.

Seaside Guesthouse

Seaside Guesthouse

It may be the middle of winter but the maritime look is always popular and you could give your guests a feeling that they were on the coast. Blue striped curtain fabrics look very smart and are ideal for this seaside scheme - use for curtains or blinds.  For cushions use fabrics with a maritime theme such as yachts, birds or shells. Team with crisp white bedlinen and to add a touch of cosiness place a woollen throw on the end of the bed.  Walls should be painted in a blue or sandy colour and add rugs to the side of the bed for extra warmth.

Too busy to redecorate?

If you haven't got the time at this busy time of year to start redecorating your guest room then a few simple additions will make the room feel welcome and cosy,  pile some cushions onto the bed, layer some throws, add some fresh flowers and magazines and your guests will feel warm and comfortable.
