How to wrap gifts with fabric

While we’re all embracing more sustainable ways to live, our attention turns to the mountain of wrapping paper left to dispose of at Christmas. To help give you a more sustainable option, we’ve pulled together four easy techniques to show you how to wrap your presents using fabric, which can be reused year after year.

We’ve embraced the traditional art of Japanese wrapping, named Furoshiki. Furoshiki is a square piece of cloth or fabric used for gift wrapping. The word refers both to the craft and to the cloth itself, which usually has an elegant, decorative design. Furoshiki has become increasingly popular with cultures around the world as it has transformed the art of gift-giving. Meaning that gifts can be given in a beautiful cloth which can be reused for gifts in future.

Technique 1 – Perfect for Wrapping Boxes

Start by laying your fabric face down, and place your present diagonally in the top corner.

Bring the corner in, to lay over the present, and roll the present down the fabric diagonally to cover.

Gather the fabric either side of the present with both hands, and bring to meet at the top and tie together.

Technique 2 – Perfect for Wrapping Bottles

Start by laying your fabric face down, and place your bottle diagonally in the top corner.

Bring the corner in, to lay over the bottle. Roll the bottle down the fabric diagonally, while also tucking the fabric in at the bottle of the bottle until you reach the end of the fabric.

Twist the fabric at the top of the bottle, then twist around the neck of the bottle and tuck the fabric into the twist.

Technique 3 – Perfect for Wrapping Boxes

Technique 3 – Perfect for Wrapping Boxes

Lay your fabric face down and place your present in the middle of the fabric.

Bring one side of the fabric to lay over the present, and then on the opposite side of fabric fold the raw edge in so you’re left with a folded edge.

Bring the folded edge to sit on top of present.

Gather the fabric either side of the present with both hands, and bring to meet at the top and tie together.

Technique 4 – Perfect for Small Gifts

Lay your fabric face down and fold corners to meet in the middle.

Place gift in the middle, where the fabric corners meet. Bring the fabric from the folded edges over the gift from both sides, and keep in place with your finger.
