Tips for using your Christmas fabric

There are many fun and quirky Christmas fabrics available. Here are some ideas of how you can use them in your home.

Making decorations for your Christmas home can be a great way to add a personal touch. Some can be part of favourite family memories and even become family heirlooms.

Tablecloth and napkins

Use your Christmas fabric to make a tablecloth. This is a simple task if you have basic sewing skills and a rectangular or square table that is no more than one metre wide. Start by measuring your table adding on about 10 cms each side and each end to allow for some overhang. Cut your fabric to size and hem round. If you have a circular or larger table you will need to join fabric to make your tablecloth. When making a cloth for a circular table it is advisable to make a paper template, this will make it easier to cut out.

Table runner

A table runner will add a festive touch to your table. Decide yow wide you want your table runner to be and then cut your Christmas fabric to size allowing for an overhang each end. Hem round. If you want to add some extra decoration you could add a binding in a contrasting colour around the edge or add a trimming to each end, perhaps a pom pom trim.

Christmas Bunting

Why not make some bunting to hang up in your home?  Make a template of a triangle out of paper to the size you want. Cut out some triangles using pinking shears – then you won’t have to hem the edges. Join together with bias binding. This would look great in a child’s bedroom or playroom.

Use fabric instead of wrapping paper

Use fabric instead of wrapping paper

Instead of using wrapping paper why not use Christmas fabric to wrap your presents. This is especially useful if you have items that are difficult shapes such as bottles. You could also use Christmas fabric to make sacks or stockings.

Cushion covers

Cushion covers

For a quick and easy way to bring a festive touch to your room you could make cushions.  To make a really easy version wrap your cushion inner in fabric and tie with a bow or you could make a piped cover.

A tartan fabric or some featuring winter animals would last the whole winter season too.

Advent calendar

Children will love a personalised advent calendar. Cut a large piece of fabric and hem round, then cut 24 smaller pieces for the pockets.  Cut out numbers 1 to 24 from a separate piece of plain fabric and applique to the pockets.  Attach the pockets to the large piece of fabric and fill with little presents or sweets.  You will be able to re-fill with new goodies every year.
