Fabric

Yes — many animal fabrics are strong enough for upholstery, whether you’re re-covering a statement armchair, a headboard, or smaller items like cushions. Heavier weaves and durable cottons tend to perform best. If you’re unsure, we recommend ordering free fabric samples to check texture, weight, and suitability for upholstery.

Yes — many Arts & Crafts fabrics are woven in robust weights, making them ideal for upholstery. A Morris-inspired print on a chair or sofa creates a statement piece, while cushions and headboards add subtle heritage detail. For confidence before ordering, request fabric samples to check weight and finish.

Most outdoor fabrics are water-resistant, some are waterproof, meaning they repel rain and spills effectively. This makes them practical for outdoor seating, table covers, and garden accessories. While water-resistant fabrics provide strong protection against rain showers, we recommend storing cushions or furniture indoors during prolonged wet weather to extend their lifespan. Many outdoor fabrics are also stain resistant options to ensure low-maintenance, practical solutions.

Washable fabrics are a brilliant choice for households with children or pets. Their easy-care properties mean spills, muddy paw prints, and everyday messes can be cleaned up quickly, helping your furniture and soft furnishings stay looking fresh. For added practicality, some washable fabrics are also available with stain resistant finishes, which make cleaning even easier. You can explore our fullstain resistant fabric collectionfor more low-maintenance options.

Our contract fabrics are fire resistant as standard and are also often stain or water repellent. This information will be detailed in the product specifications and descriptions. Please contact us on 01242 388390 for further advice.

Fabrics like stretch jersey or satin can be more challenging but are excellent once you gain confidence. For patchwork, starting with cotton quilting fabrics is a tried-and-tested approach. Ordering a selection of fabric samples is a clever way to practise before starting your main dressmaking or craft project.

Yes, many curtain fabrics double up beautifully as upholstery fabric, depending on their durability and weave. Fabrics labelled as multi-use are suitable for both curtains and soft furnishings such as chairs, cushions, and footstools. This makes it easy to create a co-ordinated look across a whole room. If you’re unsure, we recommend ordering samples and checking our upholstery fabric section for guidance.

Its heavier weight makes it more durable than standard fabrics, ensuring your cushions stay looking fresh for longer. Our inspiration guides are a great place to find styling ideas.

It’s perfect for summer dresses, shirts, and skirts, while heavier weights can be used for jackets. In craft projects, linen adds wonderful texture to patchwork, quilting, and decorative pieces. Yes, linen is versatile and works well throughout the home — from light, airy living rooms to tranquil bedrooms. For curtains and blinds, lighter weights suit relaxed spaces, while heavier linens are great for privacy and warmth. In kitchens or conservatories, blended linens can offer added durability. Definitely. Outdoor fabric is not only tough and durable but also stylish, making it a clever choice for busy indoor spaces like kitchens, playrooms, or conservatories. Because it’s resistant to stains and fading, it’s a practical option for family homes and pet-friendly areas. Many customers use outdoor fabric for hardwearing seat pads, washable loose covers, or even tablecloths, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living.

How you wash your outdoor fabric depends on the fabric itself. Always read the product description first, but generally it's safe to wash outdoor fabrics on a 30 degree, gentle cycle. Always choose air drying over tumble drying. Avoid using bleach-based detergents as they can destroy the coating on outdoor fabrics. For fabric covers that are difficult to remove, you can simply blot stains there and then. Use dish soap and water to gently sponge the stain (and if possible, apply this on both sides of the fabric). Stretch fabrics when wet over their frames (particularly true for umbrella covers, deckchair or outdoor seating fabric) as this avoids shrinking.

Yes — outdoor fabrics are ideal for making garden cushions, seat pads, and even beanbags. They are resistant to moisture, stains, and sunlight, so they stay looking fresh even when used outside. If you’d prefer a ready-made option, we also offer a wide range of outdoor cushions, including a beautiful William Morris outdoor cushion collection, perfect for adding instant style to your garden.

Absolutely. The weight and drape of velvet and velour make them perfect for made to measure curtains or roman blinds. They add a sense of luxury and help block light effectively. A good lining will enhance their fall and protect against fading.

Ticking fabric is an excellent choice for both made to measure curtains and made to measure roman blinds. The fabric’s structured weight and neat stripe pattern make it ideal for window dressings, offering a balance of durability and style. When used in curtains, ticking provides good drape and can be lined for added warmth or light control. For roman blinds, the vertical stripes add definition and rhythm to the folds when raised. Curtain fabric samples are a practical way to preview how the stripes will look in situ before committing to a finished made to measure design.

Yes, washable fabrics are an excellent choice for both upholstery and loose covers. Loose covers, sometimes called slipcovers, are removable fabric covers for sofas or chairs that can be washed when needed, making them especially practical in busy homes or for pet owners. Using washable fabrics ensures your loose covers are easy to maintain while still looking stylish. For design ideas, browse our upholstery fabric range and inspiration guides.

If you do need to use your iron to remove the creases from your tablecloth, try lying it on an ironing board with a bath towel over the top. Lightly spritz the towel with water and blow with a hairdryer. The heat should warm the plastic allowing it to become more flexible and you can smooth out the creases. If this doesn’t work, put the iron on its lowest setting and you can iron over the damp towel, ensuring you test a corner first to ensure it’s not too hot and doesn’t melt the plastic beneath.

Make sure you wipe the PVC tablecloth as soon as there is a spill to prevent or minimise any staining. You can’t put a PVC or oilcloth tablecloth in the washing machine because they are plastic, however we do sell acrylic PVC fabrics which can be washed at 30 degrees such as this bold geometric print or the versatile Linen Stripe design. Always check the washing instructions with all fabrics before you clean them.

Our FR fabrics are suitable for domestic use, not contract unless specified otherwise.

We also offer a fire retardant treatment service where we can have any other of our fabrics treated to the relevant FR standard (Domestic or Contract) whether that be for curtains or upholstery. If this service is used we will supply an FR Certificate for you which will arrive separately from your fabric delivery via email.

Some curtains can be hand washed or dry cleaned but check the fabric first for care instructions, and don’t forget to also check care instructions for the linings as they are often a different fabric and can shrink when wet.

Some curtains can be hand washed or dry cleaned but check the fabric first for care instructions, and don’t forget to also check care instructions for the linings as they are often a different fabric and can shrink when wet.

Absolutely. While these fabrics look wonderful in period houses, they also bring character and warmth to contemporary interiors. Using a bold curtain fabric or roman blind in an Arts & Crafts print can be a clever way to introduce heritage style into a minimalist scheme without overwhelming the space.

A blackout lining is useful if you want to darken a room, reduce glare, or enjoy a better night’s sleep. They’re a popular choice for bedrooms, children’s rooms, and media rooms. If you prefer to keep natural light during the day, you may choose a standard or thermal lining instead. The good news is blackout linings also provide thermal benefits, making them a versatile option if you want to combine comfort with practicality.

Not necessarily. PVC and oilcloth fabrics won’t fray, so you can simply cut them to size and use them straight away. For a more polished look, you can add a stitched hem or bind the edges. Some people also back tablecloth fabrics with felt or fleece for extra protection and weight. Whether you choose a quick cut or a tailored finish, both options work well.

Yes, alongside fabric by the metre we also offerready made tableclothsin exclusive William Morris designs. These are a brilliant option if you’d prefer a finished product without cutting and hemming fabric yourself. Available in a range of sizes and classic patterns, they combine practicality with timeless style.

Linen does have a relaxed look that includes some natural creasing — part of its timeless charm. Many customers love this easy, lived-in finish. If you prefer a smoother appearance, consider a linen blend fabric that combines linen with cotton or viscose for reduced creasing. These are popular choices for curtains, roman blinds, and upholstery, offering both beauty and practicality.

Absolutely. Linen drapes effortlessly and diffuses light in a soft, natural way — making it ideal for made to measure curtains and made to measure roman blinds. The fabric’s slightly textured surface adds depth and interest to any window treatment. For a truly polished finish, our made to measure service can tailor linen to your exact window size and style.

We have some great measuring guides here including easy to follow videos. On all of our fabrics we also have a fabric calculator tool which will calculate how much you need. If you need further advice then please get in touch with us.

A clever approach is to balance bold prints with plainer fabrics. For example, use animal curtain fabric as a statement and keep upholstery more neutral, or vice versa. Coordinating scatter cushions and roman blinds can tie the look together. You’ll find plenty of inspiration guides on our website to help spark ideas.

A tried-and-true method is to mix these intricate prints with simple plains or subtle stripes. For example, pair a bold William Morris-inspired curtain fabric with solid upholstery fabric for balance. Adding cushions or roman blinds in a complementary shade can complete the look without feeling too busy.

Information about the suitability of the fabrics is stated in the 'Product Details' section under "Usage" on each fabric. You can also refine your fabric search by filtering by usage, for example curtains, blinds or upholstery.

Ticking fabric’s simple striped design makes it highly versatile in interiors. It pairs well with plain fabrics for a clean, understated look, or with florals, checks, and geometric designs for added visual interest. Choosing upholstery fabric or curtain fabric that picks up one of the stripe’s colours can help tie a scheme together. In rustic or cottage interiors, ticking complements linen textures and muted florals, while in more contemporary spaces it can be contrasted with bold solids. Inspiration guides can provide ideas for pairing ticking with other fabrics, and fabric samples allow different combinations to be tested at home.

Fire retardant fabrics are every bit as durable as standard upholstery fabrics. In fact, many are specifically designed for high-traffic areas and have excellent Martindale rub test results. This means they can withstand everyday use on sofas, armchairs, and dining chairs while also offering enhanced safety. Choosing fire retardant options is therefore not only a smart safety decision but also a long-term investment in your furniture.

Care instructions vary by material, but most extra wide fabrics can be dry-cleaned or gently hand washed. Always follow the care label to maintain the texture, colour, and drape. It’s a good idea to request fabric samples first, so you can check the finish and feel before buying. Our inspiration guides also include tips for fabric care and long-term maintenance.

Most of our linen fabrics are washable, though always check individual care instructions. Generally, linen can be washed at low temperatures and air-dried for best results. Ironing while slightly damp helps smooth out creases, though many people embrace the fabric’s natural, relaxed crumple. Pre-washed linens are particularly easy to care for, making them ideal for loose covers.

A little routine care goes a long way. Regular vacuuming prevents dust build-up, and spot cleaning with mild soap and a damp cloth helps tackle spills quickly. Always check the care guidance for your chosen fabric before using cleaning solutions, as some may require professional cleaning. Rotating cushions and keeping furniture out of direct sunlight also prolongs its life. For extra reassurance, many of ourstain resistant upholstery fabricsmake everyday maintenance even easier, especially in busy homes. Our inspiration section is full of tips for caring for fabrics, ensuring your upholstered pieces stay looking their best for years.

Think about both practicality and style. Lighter cottons and linens are ideal for a relaxed, airy look, while heavier velvets and chenilles offer warmth and luxury. Also consider how much light you want to filter. Our inspiration guides are a helpful place to start, and you can always order free fabric samples to compare options at home.

Outdoor fabric is designed for easy maintenance. Simply wipe down with a damp cloth or sponge to remove everyday dirt and spills. Many of our outdoor fabrics are also washable at low temperatures, making them particularly convenient for cushions and covers. To prolong the life of your outdoor furnishings, bring them indoors during harsh weather or winter months. Our inspiration guides offer further tips on keeping outdoor fabrics looking their best year after year.

The quantity of washable fabric required depends on your project. A standard armchair usually takes 6–8 metres, while a three-seater sofa may need 12–16 metres. For curtains, you’ll normally want at least twice the width of your window for fullness. Loose covers can require slightly more fabric to allow for seams and movement, so measuring carefully is key. To make planning easier, see our detailed upholstery fabric measuring guide and curtain fabric measuring guide. Ordering free samples will also help you check colours and textures before committing.

Measure your table’s length and width, then add an overhang of around 20–30cm on each side. Because our PVC, oilcloth, and acrylic-coated fabrics are sold by the metre, you can order exactly the length you need. If you’d prefer not to measure or finish fabric yourself, take a look at our ready made William Morris tablecloths for a simple, stylish solution.

Simply click here to begin ordering or get an instant quote.

PVC tablecloths are rigid which means they can get creased if you leave them folded up and the lines are very hard to remove. If it’s a sunny day hang the tablecloth on a clothesline outside and the heat should cause the plastic to soften and the creases will drop out. It’s important to remember that as PVC tablecloths are plastic you can’t iron them directly as any excessive heat will melt and damage the tablecloth (and your iron). Our PVC tablecloth fabric is sold by the metre and delivered on a roll specifically to avoid creasing.

Fabric requirements vary by furniture style and size. A standard armchair often needs 6–8 metres of upholstery fabric, while a three-seater sofa may take 12–16 metres. Pattern repeats can affect quantities, so it’s always worth adding extra to allow for matching. If in doubt, measure carefully and contact our team for guidance. We’ve put together a handyupholstery fabric calculator guidethat explains everything in more detail. Ordering fabric samples first will also help you visualise your chosen design on a larger scale.

One of the best features of PVC tablecloths or oilcloths is how easy they are to wipe clean. They will protect your table from stains and water damage, and a quick spritz with antibacterial spray means it’s easy to keep clean and hygienic. However, there are certain products that will stain your PVC tablecloth, such as ink, nail varnish, curry and lily pollen. Immediately wipe spills from the tablecloth to prevent or minimise staining.

The key to keeping your outdoor furniture in tip top condition comes down to three things:

Regular inspections / cleans
Checking your outdoor fabric after each use will help prevent missed stains from setting in. Always clean up spills as soon as they occur. We recommend overall cleans of your outdoor furniture about four times per year: once at the beginning of the summer, once at the end and a couple of times in between (depending on how much entertaining the furniture has seen). To make life easier, opt for stain-resistant fabric.

Cleaning correctly and according to instructions
Never use bleach on your outdoor fabric as it can fade the material and destroy any protective coatings. For removable covers, always check the manufacturing instructions before throwing them in the washing machine.

Protection from the elements
To prolong the lifespan of your outdoor fabric keep it covered when not in use, or store removable elements inside. Outdoor fabric regularly exposed to rain, dew or frost will become mouldy and fabric in constant, direct sunlight will fade quickly.

It’s unfortunately common to get black or green spots of mould or mildew on your curtains if you regularly get condensation in a room. The most effective way of removing mould is by doing a spot clean. You will need to unhook your curtains and use a hard bristle brush on the affected area with a mild stain remover (avoid anything containing bleach which will stain). This might slightly discolour the curtains, so keep that in mind and don’t use more force to clean the fabric than necessary.

You can take steps to reduce the chances of having mould by keeping the room warm and well ventilated, investing in a dehumidifier, and replacing single-glazed windows with double glazing.

The amount of curtain fabric required depends on your window size, the curtain style, and the chosen heading — whether that’s pencil pleat, eyelet, or pinch pleat. As a rule of thumb, you’ll usually need at least twice the width of your window to achieve a nice, full drape. For a step-by-step breakdown, take a look at our detailedcurtain fabric measuring guide, which explains everything clearly. We also provide Curtain Fabric and Blind Fabric Calculators in the footer of our website that work out exact amounts for you based on your chosen fabric.

For dressmaking, the amount depends on the style and size of the garment — a simple top may need just 1–2 metres, while a full-skirted dress could take 4–5 metres. For patchwork, the quantity depends on your quilt size and the number of fabrics you’d like to mix. Our curtain fabric measuring guide offers offers helpful advice on calculating fabric amounts — the same principles apply to measuring carefully for craft projects.

As a general rule, you’ll need the same amount of lining fabric as your chosen curtain fabric. If your curtains are interlined, you’ll need the same quantity of interlining as well. To ensure the best results, always cut your lining fabric slightly shorter than the main curtain fabric so it doesn’t peek out at the bottom hem. For step-by-step help, see our curtain fabric measuring guide, which will also help you calculate lining requirements.

The quantity of fabric depends on what you’re making. A standard garden chair cushion may require around 1–2 metres of fabric, while a larger bench seat or several scatter cushions will need more. For awnings or parasols, measurements vary depending on size and design. As with upholstery fabric, it’s best to measure carefully and allow a little extra for seams and pattern repeats. Free fabric samples are available to help you choose the right outdoor fabric before committing.

Most curtain fabrics require gentle care to maintain their appearance. Regular light vacuuming or brushing prevents dust build-up, while professional cleaning is recommended for heavier fabrics such as velvet. Always check care instructions for your chosen fabric. For long-lasting results, our made to measure services ensure fabrics are lined and finished correctly, protecting them from fading and wear.

Caring for fire retardant upholstery fabric is straightforward. Regular vacuuming helps remove dust and debris, while spot cleaning with a damp cloth deals with small spills. Always check the care instructions provided with your chosen fabric, as some may need professional cleaning to maintain the fire retardant finish. For added ease of maintenance, explore our stain resistant upholstery fabrics, which can make cleaning even simpler. You’ll also find useful tips in our inspiration section for keeping fabrics looking their best.

Regular gentle vacuuming keeps pile fabrics fresh. Avoid vigorous rubbing if spills occur — instead, blot immediately with a clean cloth. Always check the care label; some velvets and chenilles can be professionally cleaned, while others are suitable for spot-cleaning. For more guidance, browse our fabric care advice articles.

Although washable fabrics are designed for easy maintenance, following a few tips will help prolong their life. Wash at the recommended temperature, avoid harsh detergents, and let fabrics dry naturally if possible. Upholstered furniture can also benefit from regular vacuuming to remove dust and debris between washes. If you’re using washable fabrics for loose covers, removing and washing them regularly helps keep furniture looking fresh. For more detailed care advice, explore our inspiration section where we share practical tips on looking after different types of fabrics. Pairing washable fabrics with stain resistant finishes is also a clever way to reduce long-term maintenance.

When browsing fabrics you can filter via usage and then ' upholstery fire retardant', which displays all the relevant fabrics. We also put FR (fire retardant) after the name on any fabrics that are fire retardant. Any fabrics that aren't FR'd we can have treated to the relevant standard at an additional cost. If unsure please contact customer service.

Not necessarily – the certificates you need are different and the tests are different.  You must have the correct certificate for the correct setting (domestic or non-domestic).  Just because something passes the (normally) more stringent non-domestic doesn’t guarantee it will pass for domestic.

While extra wide fabrics can seem more expensive, when simply looking at the price per metre. They are usually much better value if you work out the cost per metre at a standard width of fabric. So a £30/m double width fabric is actually only £15/m if you are comparing it to standard width fabric.

They can also save both time and money for made to measure curtain or roman blind projects. Plus, the seamless finish adds a touch of luxury to your interiors — one reason why designers often prefer it for high-end curtain fabrics.

Linen can be used for upholstery, particularly on occasional chairs, cushions, and headboards. Because it’s a natural fibre, it may wear faster on heavy-use items like family sofas unless blended with cotton or polyester for extra strength. Pre-washed linen fabrics are an excellent choice for loose covers, as they are easier to maintain and give furniture a relaxed, lived-in feel.

Our Tetbury herringbone linen fabric is ideal or our Cotswold Heavyweight linen fabric.

For each fabric we include a specification. If a fabric is suitable for upholstery, it will be stated under the Upholstery Grade. Some of our fabrics are harder wearing than others and all are tested to a Martindale grade. The Martindale grade is an abrasion test used to measure the durability of a fabric. The warp and weft threads are abraded to simulate wear and tear.

The rub test score is internationally recognised and measures the durability of upholstery fabric for general domestic or contract use. Fabric is categorised by a numerical score to show how durable it is. The higher the score, the more durable the fabric is.

A score of 10,000 or less: Decorative use

A fabric with this score is suitable as a decorative fabric. Use for cushions or accents. Not suitable for general domestic or furniture upholstery.

10,000 to 15,000: Light domestic use

A fabric with this score is suitable for light domestic use such as for occasional furniture. It will be dry clean only and is often for fabrics made from delicate yarns.

15,000 - 25,000: General domestic use

A fabric with this score is suitable for general domestic use. It is suitable for everyday use on main house furniture. It is not suitable for items of furniture that put a high level of stress on the fabric such as a recliner.

25,000 - 30,000: Heavy domestic use

A fabric with this score is suitable for high levels of everyday use. It is a heavy-duty fabric that would be suitable for light commercial use and items such as recliners and other motion furniture.

30,000 or more: Commercial use

A score of 30,000 or more means that a fabric is commercial grade, it can be used on heavy duty furniture and would be suitable for any commercial environment.

Yes, ticking fabric is well-suited to upholstery because of its tightly woven structure, which holds up to daily use. It is often chosen for chairs, benches, footstools, and headboards, as well as cushions and other soft furnishings. The strong weave prevents sagging and helps patterns stay crisp even after repeated use. When used for curtains or made to measure roman blinds, ticking fabric adds a tailored look and allows the clean stripes to emphasise the lines of pleats and folds. Coordinating ticking with complementary plain or patterned upholstery fabric can create a cohesive design scheme.

It is normal for washable fabrics to be subject to some degree of shrinkage, this can vary and is dependant on the type of fabric and the conditions it is used in. Unless stated we recommend to dry clean fabrics. Fading will occur naturally over time in most fabrics.

Contract is an Industry used term to indicate fabrics that can be used in commercial environments.  These are typically hospitals and care homes, educational facilities, office spaces and hospitality areas such as hotels, restaurants and cruise ships. At Just Fabrics, we have over 30 years experience in providing the ideal contract fabrics for all of the above. We know that the perfect contract fabric has to perform brilliantly as well as look fantastic - our collections for contract are specifically designed with durability and high performance in mind as well as providing you with an incredible variety of qualities, colours, price-points and textures all meeting relevant flammability standards.

Whether you are looking for a plain upholstery in that perfect shade or a statement print to make an entranceway spectacular; a wide-width voile or a flame retardant blackout fabric – we have it all.

Contract grade fabrics can also be incorporated into any residential design. See our separate Fire Retardancy and Fire Retardant Fabrics section for further information about fire retardancy requirements and specifications.

Formal dresses do not need to be hard-wearing or easy to wash as they tend to only be worn occasionally. Chiffon and georgette are both sheer or semi-sheer and make a striking over-layer. Satin and silk are shiny with a glossy shine and very form-fitting. Silk fabric tends to be more expensive than other dressmaking fabrics which is historically why it’s considered a luxury fabric and popular for formal occasions.

Choosing made to measure curtains or made to measure roman blinds ensures your window treatments are crafted to your exact measurements. This creates a professional finish and allows you to select from our full range of curtain fabrics. Our expert team handles every detail, from precise fabric quantities to pattern matching, so you get beautiful results tailored to your home.

When you are choosing curtain lining, it’s important to understand what exactly curtain lining does, and what you want the curtains’ function to be.

Thermal lined curtains are usually double or triple layers, and the thermal lining has heat retention properties. They can help keep out drafts from windows and are a popular choice for anyone looking for ways to reduce their heating bill in winter, but also keep hot air out by reflecting it outside in the warmer months. Because of their thickness, they are the most effective at muffling noise from outside if you live in a built-up area or near a busy road. Read more about the best types of curtain lining for your needs.

Arts & Crafts fabrics are characterised by detailed, nature-inspired motifs and repeating patterns. Think trailing vines, bold florals, and stylised leaves. Many designs echo the work of William Morris, whose textiles remain iconic today. These patterns lend themselves beautifully to curtain fabric, upholstery fabric, and made to measure curtains or roman blinds.

Essentially, having furniture that’s Crib 5 (AKA Ignition Source 5) compliant means your furniture and furnishings have passed UK Fire Regulations for most commercial environments. This doesn’t mean items are completely fireproof, but it greatly reduces the risk of ignition, which can save many lives in the long-run.

This test is used in relation to upholstery and furniture coverings and is conducted by building a small crib-like structure from wooden planks that have been glued together. These structures have to be five tiers high to be used in the test — hence the name Crib 5. Another standard (referred to as Crib 7), is used to test materials that will go into prison cells and high-risk environments.

Lint is attached to the bottom of the structure and propane-diol (a non-flammable liquid) is added. The structure is then ignited with a match.

For a material to pass the Crib 5 test, the flames must extinguish themselves within 10 minutes, and they mustn’t burn to the end of the material or through the padding behind it.

Inherently fire retardant (IFR), or sometimes inherently flame retardant, refers to fabrics which naturally resist ignition and burning without having to be treated with chemicals. Our Balmoral Tartan Fabric is a good example of an IFR fabric. Fire retardant fabric (FR) are those that have been treated with a chemical solution to reduce flammability. This is usually a coating over the fabric. Our Apperley fabric is a FR, treated fabric that comes in a variety of colours and, like all of our FR fabrics, has a non-treated version too.

There are many types of fabric which are used to make dresses so it’s best to consider what style of dress you want and how often you will be wearing it. Lightweight and medium weight fabrics such as cotton, linen and polyester are popular for everyday wear, with cotton and linen being particularly good for summer dresses. Silk, chiffon and satin are soft and flowing fabrics which are perfect for special-occasion dresses. Velvet has a luxury feel and is a good choice for a slightly warmer and more structured dress.

Some of our fabrics are already treated and this will be mentioned in the description or extra info. Other fabrics can often be treated to either Domestic or Contract requirement for an extra fee. Please get in contact with us to find out more. Always check with your upholsterer first as they can advise you whether you need your fabric treated or if you can use a barrier cloth.

Depending on what your fabric is for, it may require treatment to ensure it meets the relevant British Safety Standards. (This is usually true for upholstery projects.) We can treat any upholstery fabrics that have not already been treated. The process takes around two weeks. Simply, get in touch on 01242 388390 or orders@justfabrics.co.uk.

PVC tablecloths are usually printed cotton fabrics with a PVC plastic finish and are also referred to as oilcloths. PVC tablecloths (or oilcloths) are very durable so can withstand heavy use and are a popular choice for kitchen, craft, play and outdoor tables. They are thick, rigid and wipe clean so protect the table from spills and scratch damage.

When considering which is better, acrylic or cotton, it depends which qualities you are looking for with your fabric. Acrylic is an artificial yarn which makes a strong fabric that is warm, hard-wearing and has excellent heat-retaining properties. It doesn’t have much stretch which means garments will hold their shape over time and is easy to care for. As acrylic is man-made, it is cheaper than cotton which is a natural fabric. Cotton fabric is much softer and can handle coming into close contact with heat. This means it is better suited for kitchen and bathroom materials as well as soft bedding.

Curtain lining is an extra layer of fabric that is attached to the back of a curtain. It can transform your curtains from something decorative to having a valued function. Choosing the correct lining for your curtains means you can block out unwanted light, save on energy costs by keeping a room insulated in the winter, and reduce outside noise.

Curtain lining is also a popular choice if you want fuller looking curtains, to add shape, or by opting for a patterned lining you can ensure your curtains look as good from the outside as they do from inside. We stock a huge selection of curtain linings and our in-house team can help you when deciding what function you need your curtains to serve.

Extra wide fabric is designed to eliminate joins or seams in larger projects, making it ideal for wide windows, bedspreads, and tablecloths. It’s especially popular for curtains and roman blinds, where a continuous width creates a smooth, elegant drape. Many customers also choose extra wide upholstery fabric for larger pieces like sofas or headboards. If you’re unsure how much fabric you’ll need, check out our advice and guides section.

Fire retardant upholstery fabric has been treated or woven to resist ignition and slow the spread of flames, giving added peace of mind in the home. While it’s not a legal requirement for every project, many customers choose it for safety, especially in family living rooms or commercial settings. At Just Fabrics, we clearly label fire retardant options so you can select the right fabric for your needs. Samples are available so you can see the look and feel before committing.

Interlining is an extra layer of fabric that sits between the outer fabric and the lining and is popular if you need to add weight to a lighter fabric so that the curtains hang better, and they are more effective at insulating a room. Interlining gives the curtains a full and luxurious look.

Tapestry fabric is traditionally woven for decorative use — ideal for upholstery curtains, cushions, wall hangings and accessories. Its dense weave makes it durable yet beautifully detailed, perfect for creating heirloom-style pieces or refreshing vintage furniture.

PVC tablecloth fabric is often referred to as oilcloth so the terms are used interchangeably, particularly as they are both popular choices when people are looking for a wipe-clean fabric for their table. But they have a different feel and sit differently on your table.

A PVC tablecloth is made from a roll of white vinyl PVC which is then printed with a pattern or design, whereas oilcloth is made from cotton fabric that has a pattern printed onto it and then has a clear gloss coating of PVC to protect the cotton base.

As PVC tablecloths are 100% plastic they have a more rigid feel, whilst the cotton base of an oilcloth tablecloth means it is slightly softer and has a softer drape around the edges of a table. You can find more information in our handy guide to PVC tablecloths.

A patchwork is a piece of fabric that has been created by sewing together a number of patches into small sections, and then joining the sections. Quilting is sewing three layers of fabric together with wadding or batting in between, which gives a padded feel. The top layer is known as the quilt top, the middle layer is the padding or insulation, and then the backing material.

When sewing together lots of different patches of material, it is commonly called patchwork but can also be referred to as piecework. The act of making patchwork is called piecing.

Velvet is woven with a dense pile for a smooth, light-reflecting sheen, while chenille uses a fuzzy yarn that gives a soft, textured surface. Velour shares velvet’s plush feel but is knitted rather than woven, making it more flexible. All three are ideal for curtains, upholstery and accessories, depending on the finish you prefer.

No fabric is entirely fire-resistant, but some are more fireproof than others. Wool is generally the most naturally fire resistant fabric. It’s difficult to ignite, and if it does ignite, it burns slower than other fabrics. Furthermore, the construction of the fibres helps extinguish the flames.

Our Cotswold Wool is fire resistant as well as being incredibly versatile and eco-friendly - being made from recycled wool fibres. Read our article here for more reasons to embrace wool fabric.

Regular fabrics can also be made fire resistant or retardant with a chemical treatment that resists flames. Our Vintage Velvet fabric is one such chemically treated fabric.

Cotton is the most popular fabric in the world. It is light, breathable, and gets softer the more it is washed. The softness of cotton means it is also a good option for people who might have sensitive skin as it won’t cause irritation. Cotton is long-lasting and can be made into casual, everyday dresses as well as more formal outfits.

Ticking fabric is a tightly woven textile, traditionally made from cotton or linen, and instantly recognised by its fine vertical stripes. Unlike ordinary striped cotton, ticking is designed for strength and durability, with a close weave that resists wear. This makes it highly practical for use as upholstery fabric, cushion covers, and headboards, while also lending structure to curtain fabric, made to measure curtains, and roman blinds. Its crisp stripe definition provides a classic look that has remained timeless across both rustic and modern interiors.

A durable fabric is one that stands the test of time when used regularly. Synthetic fabrics such as nylon, polyester or polyethylene are very durable. Of the natural fabrics, linen and silk are the strongest.

However, which fabric to choose depends on its use. Each fabric has different qualities and will suit different projects. For example, it’s unlikely that you’ll want to use silk for outdoor furniture, and if you want to reupholster furniture, you should specifically choose upholstery fabric

The durability of a fabric usually depends on its weave (for natural fabrics) and its chemical properties (for synthetic fabrics). Our range of outdoor fabrics are specifically made with durability and water, stain and fade resistance in mind.

At Just Fabrics, the most durable fabrics are those with a high martindale score, listed under the product details for many of our fabrics. The martindale test is an abrasion rub test that measures fabrics’ durability.

Washable fabrics are designed to withstand cleaning in a washing machine or by hand without losing their shape, colour, or finish. They’re woven from fibres that can handle water and detergents, making them more practical than dry-clean-only fabrics. This makes washable fabrics a fantastic choice for busy households where spills and stains are part of everyday life. Many are also hardwearing, with high Martindale rub test scores that confirm their durability. You can learn more about fabric strength in our Martindale guide.

Linen is a natural fibre made from the flax plant, valued for thousands of years for its strength, breathability, and effortless style. Its distinctive texture gives it a relaxed, timeless look that works across interiors and dressmaking. Linen also softens with every wash and use, meaning it only gets better over time. Our linen inspiration guide explores the many ways this versatile fabric can be used in both homes and wardrobes.

Outdoor fabric is specially designed to withstand the elements. Unlike standard curtain or upholstery fabric, it is woven or coated to be water-resistant or waterproof, UV-resistant to reduce fading in sunlight, and robust enough to cope with frequent use outdoors. This makes it the perfect choice for garden cushions, outdoor seating, and even awnings. Many of our outdoor fabrics also achieve highMartindale rub test scores, giving extra reassurance of their durability.

Ticking fabric is produced in a variety of stripe widths, from narrow pinstripes to wider, more rustic bands, and comes in classic shades such as navy, charcoal, red, and soft neutrals. Narrow stripes work well in smaller rooms or when paired with other patterned fabrics, while wider stripes create a bold statement. When choosing, it is important to consider the room’s scale, the effect of natural light, and how the stripe will sit against other curtain fabric or upholstery fabric. Ordering fabric samples is a helpful way to test both colour and stripe width before starting a project.

Our collection spans everything from whimsical cartoon animals for children’s rooms to elegant wildlife prints for grown-up interiors. You’ll find fabrics featuring woodland creatures, safari animals, farmyard favourites, and birds, giving you endless design options. These are available as curtain fabric, upholstery fabric, and suitable materials for made to measure curtains and roman blinds.

Curtain fabrics come in many styles, including soft cottons, luxurious velvets, light linens, and practical blends. Each fabric type has unique qualities — for example, linen curtain fabric offers a relaxed, natural drape, while velvet brings depth and elegance. At Just Fabrics, our collection is carefully curated to help you find the perfect curtain fabric for your home. You can also request fabric samples to see colours and textures in person before deciding.

For sofas, armchairs, and other frequently used pieces, durability is essential. Hardwearing options like chenille, tweed, and polyester blends offer excellent resilience, while velvet is both robust and stylish. It’s worth checking theMartindale rub test score, which measures how many rubs a fabric can withstand before showing wear — the higher the score, the tougher the fabric. You can read more about the test in ourMartindale guide. Fire retardant upholstery fabric is also a clever choice for family homes and contract spaces where extra safety is needed. To create a cohesive look, you may want to explore our curtain fabric collection too. Free fabric samples are available, making it easy to compare at home.

Standard fabrics are typically around 137cm (54") wide, while extra wide fabrics can range from 280cm to 320cm or more. This extra width allows you to create made to measure curtains and blinds without needing to join panels, which results in a professional, seamless finish. It’s worth remembering that wider widths can also be more economical for certain upholstery projects, depending on pattern placement and fabric design.

The terms are used interchangeably but there is a slight difference. Fire resistant fabrics (also known as flame-resistant fabrics) don’t easily ignite and the fibres they’re comprised of melt before burning. Fire retardant fabrics on the other hand will ignite and burn, but will do so at a slower rate than regular fabrics and often self-extinguish.

Upholstery fabric is heavier, tightly woven, and designed to cope with daily wear, making it ideal for furniture. Curtain fabric, on the other hand, is usually lighter and intended to drape beautifully at windows. While curtain fabric can work for cushions or occasional chairs, upholstery fabric is the best choice for sofas and high-use seating. Many customers like to coordinate the two, creating a polished look by choosing curtain fabric in a complementary design.

Lining your curtains gives them a fuller, more luxurious drape while also protecting the fabric from fading in sunlight. A lining can also improve the longevity of your curtains by reducing wear on the main fabric. Beyond looks, linings are practical too, with thermal and blackout options offering extra insulation or light control. Whether you’re working with plain or patterned curtain fabric, adding a lining is a simple way to achieve a professional finish.

4m and under will be folded, any larger orders will be rolled. All PVC fabrics and velvet fabrics will be sent rolled to avoid creasing.

Tracks & Poles

Yes, many curtain tracks are designed specifically for bay windows, allowing a smooth curve around the frame so your curtains hang neatly and operate with ease.

Yes, at Just Fabrics we offer a full made-to-measure curtain service. Our expert team can help you select the right fabric and ensure your curtains are perfectly tailored to your chosen pole or track.

Measure the width of your window and allow extra space on either side so curtains can stack back neatly. For poles, choose a length that extends beyond the window frame. For tracks, ensure the size matches your window width and layout, especially for bays or recesses.

Curtain poles are decorative and visible, often made from wood or metal, and add a stylish finishing touch to your window. Curtain tracks are more discreet, usually hidden from view, and allow curtains to glide smoothly along the rail.

Both can work for heavy curtains, but a sturdy curtain pole with strong brackets is often preferred for a decorative finish. For large windows or bay windows, heavy-duty curtain tracks are an excellent choice as they provide even support and effortless movement.
