Fabric Care Information

Care Information | Just Fabrics

With the right care and a little preparation, your chosen fabrics will bring lasting style and enjoyment to your home.

For the best results, we recommend consulting a professional cleaner before cleaning. In most cases, curtain and upholstery fabrics are best dry cleaned to help preserve their colour, texture, and overall finish - ensuring they continue to look beautiful in your home for years to come.

When making curtains or loose covers, it’s important to allow for natural shrinkage. Most fabrics can shrink by around 5–6% when cleaned or even over time in certain room conditions. Adding generous, loosely stitched hems gives you the flexibility to lengthen if needed later on.

If you’re working with patterned fabrics - particularly across multiple widths - take time to check the pattern alignment before cutting. Pattern repeats can vary slightly from roll to roll, so allowing a little extra fabric will help you achieve a balanced, professional finish. Once fabric has been cut, we’re unable to accept returns, so careful planning is key.

As with all textiles, slight variations in weave, print, or colour are part of the fabric’s character and should be expected. Over time, exposure to sunlight may also cause colours to soften or fade. Similarly, changes in temperature and humidity can affect how curtains hang. Heavier fabrics in particular may respond to moisture in the air, so maintaining a consistent room environment will help them look their best.

It’s always wise to allow for small adjustments once your curtains or furnishings are in place. While this is part of the natural process of creating a beautifully finished space, any alteration costs remain the customer’s responsibility.

Silk Fabric:

As a natural fibre, silk may show slight irregularities in texture or weave. These are not faults, but part of its unique beauty and charm.

Velvet Fabric:

Velvet should always be dry cleaned to maintain its luxurious pile. As a delicate fabric, the pile can be disturbed during handling or use, sometimes creating areas that appear lighter or darker - this is known as pressure marking and is completely normal.

After hanging, velvet benefits from time to settle. As it adjusts to the room, the pile will relax, enhancing its depth and sheen. If needed, gentle steaming or light brushing in the direction of the pile can help restore its appearance. Velvet curtains, particularly when unlined, are not designed to block all light, and small pinpricks of light may occasionally be visible. These minor characteristics do not affect the overall look or performance.

When choosing velvet, you may also notice differences depending on the pile direction. A pile brushed upwards gives a richer, deeper colour, while a downward pile reflects more light for a softer sheen - both are beautiful, and the choice comes down to personal preference.

Finally, if your fabric has been treated with a flame-retardant finish, it’s worth noting that some finishes are non-durable and may be affected by moisture. Be sure to choose the option that best suits your needs and environment.
