Trend Alert

A top trend for the year ahead. Here we are looking at some of the trends for the coming year that can easily be incorporated into your home.

Looking Ahead

Looking Ahead

Beginning any room revamp can be daunting when you don’t know where to start, especially when you want to be on trend with the key colours and designs of the year. I recently visited the fantastic Interiors UK show in Birmingham and was particularly interested in the trend predictions for this year.

Indigo

Following through from 2013 is the colour indigo. This is the predominant colour of the interior design style ‘Coban’ which focuses on the outdoors, especially a love of water and the elements and is set to be a key trend for 2014. Strong blues like indigo match beautifully with sandy beiges so your scheme needn’t be overpowering.

Nautical

Think yachts, seaside huts and bold, fresh colours. Mixing strong hues with lighter, softer blues creates a harmonious colour scheme which will relax and calm. An element of nautical and maritime can be used for this design style but don’t go overboard (no pun intended!) Adding a rope accessory, for example as a simple tie back, is a simple addition that will finish the scheme off brilliantly.

Top Tip

Top Tip

The key to this versatile trend is the combination of luxury and utility. Crisp white surfaces used with reclaimed materials or driftwood makes a great contrast that will really add depth to your interiors. Mixing textures on soft furnishing fabrics for cushions, curtains or upholstery works well too.

Versatility

Versatility

This trend can be brought in to your home no matter what style of house you have, whether you have a blank canvas, or just want to bring a room back to life. If you like to keep things simple then I’d suggest using a sandy shade as the base colour and accessorising in various shades of blue, with a touch of white to bring everything together. Grid patterns and polka dots will continue to be popular throughout 2014 so try and incorporate these into the scheme, whether that be on a feature roman blind or just a decorative lamp.

Final Choices

Final Choices

As a last tip, create a mood board.  They are simple to make and are a fantastic way of keeping your ideas together and testing what works and what doesn’t before you make the final choices.
