How to make a Christmas pudding pin cushion

Give your sewing room a quirky, festive addition with this fun Christmas pudding pin cushion craft, a quick and easy sewing project to do to get you into the Christmas spirit.

This craft can be done over a few short hours, requiring a small amount of fabric and is perfect for beginners. Get your sewing needles out and try out this fun, festive craft and add a quirky finishing touch to your sewing accessories! 

The fabrics we used were Cotswold Velvet Umber for the brown base, Festive Fir Green for the leaves and Starlit Sparkle Red for the berries. We also followed our handy guide for self-covered buttons which can be found here.  

What you will need: 

  • Sewing Needle and thread 
  • Brown fabric for base 
  • White felt
  • Second fabric for your leaves
  • Third fabric to cover buttons
  • 11mm Covered buttons 
  • Pencil
  • Filling
  • Cardboard
  • Elastic 

 

 

Step 1

Firstly, cut out a circle of your main fabric with a 15cm diameter and using your white felt, draw and cut out a blob shape.

Then, sew your blob shape onto the centre of your circle of fabric and then hand sew a running stitch around the edge of the circle.

Next, stuff the pudding with your chosen filling, tighten the running stich and hand sew the pudding closed.

Now, cut out a cardboard circle that has a diameter of 4cm and then cut out a circle of your main fabric that’s slightly bigger.

Place both circles on the base of your pudding and then hand sew the circles to the base, covering the hold used to stuff.

Afterwards, hand draw and cut out 4 identical leaves from your second fabric and with the right sides facing out, hand sew them together in pairs.

Now, position both of your leaves onto the pudding and hand sew them in place and then make 2 cover buttons using your third fabric and secure the cover buttons in place, just below your leaves.

Finally, loop approx. 10cm of elastic and secure it to the pudding’s base 

Your Christmas pudding pin cushion is now complete and ready to be used for all of your sewing projects this Winter!
